Two Strong Quakes Hit Mexico

GUERRERO NEGRO, MEXICO (BNO NEWS) -- Two strong earthquakes just minutes apart shook a desert region in the Mexican state of Baja California on early Thursday morning, seismologists said, but there were no immediate reports of damage or casualties.
The first earthquake at 12:05 a.m. local time (0705 GMT), which had a magnitude of 6.0 on the Richter scale, was sentenced in a mountainous desert region in Baja California, just west of San Lorenzo Island in the Gulf of California. It struck about 15 kilometers (9.3 miles) deep, making it a shallow earthquake, according to the Mexican Seismological Service (SSN).
Minutes later, at 12:15 a.m. local time (0715 GMT), a stronger earthquake with a magnitude of 6.8 on the Richter scale struck the same region in Baja California. The second earthquake, some 110 kilometers (68 miles) northeast of Guerrero Negro, was slightly more shallow at a depth of just 10 kilometers (6.2 miles), SSN reported.
The United States Geological Survey (USGS), which measured the earthquakes at magnitudes 6.2 and 6.9, respectively, estimated that some 108,000 people near the epicenter may have felt strong to very strong shaking. Another 1.5 million people further away from the epicenter may have felt light to moderate shaking, the agency estimated.
There were no reports of serious damage or casualties.
Thursday's earthquakes followed a strong 6.4-magnitude earthquake which struck off the Pacific coast of Mexico on late Wednesday afternoon, causing tall buildings to sway as far away as Mexico City but causing no damage or casualties. The earthquake on Wednesday was unrelated to Thursday's events.
Mexico sits on the so-called 'Pacific Ring of Fire', an arc of fault lines circling the Pacific Basin which is prone to frequent and large earthquakes. Late last month, a powerful 7.4-magnitude earthquake struck southwestern Mexico, killing at least two people and injuring 11 others.

Caribbean Plate Stress Causes Earthquakes in Cuba and Jamaica

The Earthquake Unit at the Mona Campus of the University of the West Indies says tremors from a magnitude 5.0 (4.9 USGS) earthquake that occurred in Cuba this morning were felt in several parishes in Jamaica. This is the second earthquake felt in Jamaica in consecutive days following the 3.4 magnitude quake recorded near Yallahs, St Thomas, yesterday. A release from the unit says this morning’s earthquake occurred at 3:34 and was felt in Clarendon, St Catherine, St Mary and Kingston and St Andrew. There are no reports of any damage or injuries. The epicentre of the earthquake was in the Santiago de Cuba province.

3.1 Earthquake quivers L.A

A shallow magnitude 3.1 earthquake was reported Sunday morning 12 miles from Hawthorne, Nev., according to the U.S. Geological Survey. The temblor occurred at 9:37 a.m. Pacific time at a depth of 7.5 miles.
According to the USGS, the epicenter was 14 miles from Wichman, Nev., 22 miles from Schurz, Nev., and 147 miles from Sacramento.
In the past 10 days, there have been two earthquakes of magnitude 3.0 and greater centered nearby.

3.4 EarthQuake hits Mt St. Helens

SEATTLE (AP) -- A magnitude 3.4 earthquake occurred at 2:51 a.m. Wednesday about 10 miles north of Mount St. Helens.
The Pacific Northwest Seismic Network reports mild shaking was felt in Longview, Castle Rock and Morton.
The University of Washington reports the quake was followed by a half-dozen small aftershocks in the next hour.
Small quakes are common in the area around the volcano in southwest Washington.

5.5 Earthquake in Iran

TEHRAN, Iran – An earthquake of moderate strength caused damage and injured 100 people in the city of Neyshabour in the northeast part of Iran Thursday afternoon, Iran's state TV reported.

The TV report said 17 of the injured were hospitalized and the others were treated for minor injuries and released.

As the quake rumbled through the area, many residents of the city fled their homes into the streets. Rescue teams were still at work in the area late Thursday.

The magnitude 5.5 quake shattered windows and affected communications for a short time.
It also destroyed walls of homes in some rural areas, the report said.

Residents of several cities and towns 60 miles from the epicenter reported feeling the quake.

The quake jolted the city of 220,000 in about 550 miles northeast of the capital Tehran at 16:05 local time.

Iran is located on seismic fault lines and is prone to earthquakes, experiencing at least one slight quake a day on average.

In 2003, some 26,000 people were killed by a magnitude 6.6 quake that flattened the historic southeastern city of Bam.

A strong earthquake with a magnitude of 7 hit eastern and northeastern Japan today, but there are no immediate reports of injuries or damage and no danger of a tsunami.

The quake, which measured 4 in central Tokyo, Fukushima and their surrounding areas, struck 217 miles below the sea surface at 2.28pm (5.27am GMT).

Such a deep jolt is less likely to cause damage than one close to the surface.

It was centred near Japan’s Izu Islands, about 307 miles south-southwest of the capital, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. 

Buildings swayed in Tokyo, but did not disrupt the final of the Emperor's Cup football tournament being played at the National Stadium.

A spokesman for Tokyo Electric Power said there were no reports of any irregularities at the tsunami-crippled Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plan.

Some roads were temporarily closed and high-speed train services in northern Japan were suspended for a short time.

The Hawaii-based US Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre has not issued a tsunami.

John Roos, the U.S. ambassador to Japan, said in a message on Twitter: ' 'Memorable start to New Year — about to greet Emperor and Empress for New Year when Imperial Palace began to shake.'

Japan, which lies along the Pacific 'Ring of Fire,' is one of the world's most seismically active countries.

It accounts for about 20 per cent of the world's earthquakes of magnitude 6 or greater.

Last March, the northeast coast was struck by a record magnitude 9 earthquake, and a massive tsunami, which triggered the world's worst nuclear crisis in 25 years since Chernobyl.

The disaster left more than 20,000 dead or missing.
